Temple of The Tooth -The royal palace which holds the sacred Tooth relic of Buddha is the most sacred temple found in the island and is visited by thousands of devotees form all over the country throughout the year. Every year during the month of August the tooth relic is paraded along the streets of Kandy, known as the Kandian pageant where over 200 Elephants also participate along with several hundred cultural dances can be witnessed.
Since the sacred tooth relic of Buddha was brought to the island, it has remained with royalty. The relic was enshrined in Kandy in a building that King Vimaladharmasuriya I. The founder of the building that had constructed it was subsequently placed by his successors in new and renovated buildings. The temple known as the Dalada Maligawa has undergone several phases of development, including the incorporation of pathirippuwa, or octagon, which now houses a rare collection of Buddhist books. The custodian of the Temple of the Sacred tooth, the Diyawadana Nilame, ensures the smooth functioning of the temple.
The entrance to the temple is over the most, and stone stairway leads the visitor through a tunnel to the drummers’ courtyard. Facing the visitor is a two – storey building the upper floor of which enshrines the gem – studded gold caskets containing the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. Millions of devotees have venerated the sacred relic. Through the ages, thousand of other objects, made mostly out of precious stones and metals and donated to the temple by rulers, dignitaries and well – wishers, have come to adorn the sacred chamber. Every day thousand of devotees gather here at the temple from all over the island to light lamps, offer incense and pay homage to the Enlightened one whose sacred tooth relic is enshrined there. The monks, as well as those in attendance, including drummers, perform their daily rituals. The art, architecture and paintings in the temple, stand testimony to the generosity of the king and other members of royalty who patronized the temple through the years to enhance its beauty and enrich its history.
Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya
The largest botanical garden found in the island is located in Peradeniya, Kandy. These were the leisure gardens of the kings in Kandy.
With a variety of flora found approx about 4,000 plant species, the large landscape takes at least 2 to 3 hours to walk through the garden.
Also the largest collection of orchids are found here in Peradeniya along with several other beautiful flowers that bloom throughout the year.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage –
En route to Kandy stop over at the orphanage to witness the Elephants feeding during the morning, afternoon and evening time. The orphanage is the only one of its kind, founded in 1975 to house and nurture baby orphaned Elephants. Currently it houses over 70 Elephants including young and adults, who are cared for. Witness the morning feed and watch them enjoy a river bath. Many tourist who visit Pinnawala spend most of the day there and find it hard to leave the gentle giants behind.
