Beaches of Sri Lanka

For all those who love the sun and sand no matter which part of the world you may travel form, the spotless beaches of Lanka is a must! in your holiday menu. Things you need to watch out for:


In any environment, may it be out in the water or on the beach or while you travel it is always best to make sure you're doing the right thing!

  • As the island is situated close to the equator you could easily get sun burnt  – always apply a good sun-tan lotion which will prevent you from getting sun burnt- available at most local pharmacies which are found in all towns
  • Watch out for red flags in the water – as the water tends to have deep undersea currents, places that are not safe to have sea baths are marked with red flags, in the event you are not sure if a location is safe or not its best the inquire form locals or a nearby hotel 
  • If you do not know how to swim – please avoid the deep areas and stay close to the shore, you could also use a life jacket just to be on the safe side

Parents please keep your EYES on your kids – remember its not just the water that could cause harm and its always best to be safe than sorry.

West coast 

Negombo

The famous transit beach point to visitors who travel to the island for short stays or while on transit to another destination, as the international air ports is situated just 6kms form the west coast of Negombo. As a fishing village Negombo is also a favorite tourist destination which offers a beautiful beach. Places to stay are ample, ranging from star class to average lodges and inns.

South Coast

The beach strip which has the most recorded beach hotels and well reputed for many tourist, is the south coast. Starting from Mount Lavinia to Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle up to Tissamaharama where one could find spotless beaches along with hotels to suit your budget and standard.



Mount Lavinia

A city situated close to the commercial capitol is where the famous Mount Lavinia hotel is based, once the official residence of a British governor which has been transformed into a star class beach hotel. Also many other hotels and guest houses and several sea food restaurants are found in Mount Lavinia.

Wadduwa, Beruwala, Bentota

With the most number of star class beach hotels recorded, and is also famous for its sparkling beaches where one could relax or indulge in water sports, deep sea fishing. The restaurants situated  are famous for delicious fresh sea food dishes, along with every other cuisine. There are also several boutique style luxury villas and hotel for those who desire for service and tranquility.

Hikkaduwa

The famous tourist village is best know for its coral reefs and water sports such as surfing. As the reef is situated close to the shore, snorkeling is the best way to explore the beauty. You could also enjoy a glass bottom boat ride. Hikkaduwa likewise has many hotels and is famous for sea food with a selection of restaurants.

Unawatuna

Acclaimed as one of the 12 best beaches in the world, Unawatuna is a beautiful golden beach with  clear water and sparkling white waves. The calm waters are best for swimming and the location is situated close the famous city of Galle. There are many places you can find accommodation, form basic lodges to star class hotels in and around the beach.

Mirissa

Yet another famous location along the south coat is know mainly for Whale and Dolphin watching during the season November to August. Also many other activities include; diving, water sports, boat rides. The beach is untouched and beautiful, however sea bathing is not that advisable specially during monsoon season.

East Coast

A relatively new destination for most tourist mainly due to the crisis conditions of war is now up rising just as fast as the rest of the country with un spoiled sparkling beaches and places to stay.

Trincomalee

The best know beach location situated in the East coast know as Nilaweli beach is yet another famous destination for both foreign and local travelers who are attracted to the unspoiled beaches. It is also know for surfing and has an array of accommodation including some good star class hotels.

 Arugam Bay

Situated close to the town of Pothuvil lies a surfers paradise, renowned over the world as one of the best surfing locations, many “surf-holicks “ travel the worth while distance to this destination. With moderate accommodation on should at least spend 3 – 5 days on the beach. For those who love surfing there are plenty of surfboard rent-outs along the cost.
